Our Site and Campus
The Ecology School rents the campus from the Ferry Beach Park Association and is located on Ferry Beach in Saco, Maine (90 minutes north of Boston, 30 minutes south of Portland). Our coastal campus is the ideal outdoor classroom with many ecosystems within walking distance including the beach, dunes, salt marsh, and forest. Also nearby are Ferry Beach State park, a coastal fishing village and jetty.
Three separate dormitories – Rowland, Underwood and Quillen – house up to 180 students along with teacher and parent chaperones. Dorm rooms hold between two and six students and are furnished with beds, closets and dressers.
The Dining Hall is located in the very center of campus, and is also the center of our Food For Thought program. Students, staff and chaperones come together for three home cooked meals per day, enjoying family style dining and an opportunity to share experiences from the day. It is also a time to learn where our food is coming from, where our waste is going to, and how we can reduce our impact on these systems. Meals shared in the spacious Dining Hall add another interactive and educational aspect to our community.
The Ferry Beach campus provides access to eight distinct coastal ecosystems within walking distance: seven miles of sand beach, primary and secondary dune systems, forest (including vernal pools), streams and ponds, salt marsh, tupelo swamp, tide pools and an organic garden on-site. This accessibility enables our instruction to provide exceptional context for contrast and comparison, ecosystem connections, and opportunities to observe change on a variety of scales.
